METRO

How it works

Metronidazole belongs to the class of drugs called nitroimidazole antimicrobials. It is a prodrug that becomes active inside anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites by inhibiting their nucleic acid synthesis. The medication works by damaging the organism's DNA, ultimately leading to cell death. 

Uses

Metronidazole is effective against a variety of anaerobic bacterial and parasitic infections but is not used for viral infections like the common cold or flu. 

Common uses for metronidazole include:

Bacterial infections:

Endocarditis (infection of the heart lining)

Meningitis (infection of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord)

Pneumonia and other respiratory tract infections

Intra-abdominal and gynecological infections

Bone and joint infections

Skin and soft tissue infections

Parasitic infections:

Trichomoniasis (a sexually transmitted infection)

Amebiasis (an intestinal and liver infection)

Giardiasis (an intestinal infection)

Pelvic inflammatory diseaseRosacea (as a topical treatment)

Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) colitis (in less severe cases, but other drugs are now generally preferred)

Important warnings

Alcohol interaction: You should not consume alcohol or products containing propylene glycol while taking metronidazole and for at least three days after stopping the medication. The combination can cause a severe reaction with symptoms such as flushing, headache, nausea, and vomiting.

Cancer risk: A serious "boxed warning" from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notes that metronidazole has caused cancer in animal studies. Therefore, unnecessary use of the drug should be avoided.

Severe skin reactions: In rare cases, metronidazole can cause serious and life-threatening skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis.

Neurological effects: The medication has been associated with central nervous system issues, such as seizures, encephalopathy (abnormal brain function), and peripheral neuropathy (tingling or numbness in the limbs).

Liver disease: Patients with Cockayne syndrome, a rare genetic disorder, are at higher risk for severe liver problems, which can be fatal.

CIPRO

Ciprofloxacin (brand names Cipro, Cipro XR, and Proquin XR) is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat or prevent a variety of bacterial infections. It is available in oral, intravenous, and topical formulations (otic and ophthalmic). The oral version can be in tablet form or as an oral suspension. 

Warning: Because of the risk of serious side effects, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advises reserving fluoroquinolone antibiotics, including ciprofloxacin, for certain infections when no other treatment options are available. 

Uses

Ciprofloxacin treats bacterial infections by killing the bacteria or preventing its growth. It is not effective against viral illnesses like the common cold or flu. MedlinePlus states ciprofloxacin is used to treat or prevent certain bacterial infections, including: 

Pneumonia

Gonorrhea

Typhoid fever

Infectious diarrhea

Skin, bone, and joint infections

Abdominal infections

Anthrax

Plague

Chronic bronchitis

Sinus infections

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) 

Side effects

According to the FDA, ciprofloxacin has a boxed warning for the risk of serious, potentially irreversible side effects. You should stop taking the medication and contact your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms of these or other severe side effects. 

NAPROXEN

Naproxen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat pain, inflammation, and fever. It is available both by prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) under brand names like Aleve (OTC) and Naprosyn (prescription). 

Common uses

According to MedlinePlus and WebMD, naproxen is commonly used to treat a variety of conditions, including: 

Arthritis: Pain, swelling, and stiffness associated with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and juvenile arthritis.

Musculoskeletal pain: Such as back pain, muscle aches, tendinitis, and bursitis.

Menstrual cramps.

Gout attacks.

Headaches.

Fever. 

Dosage and forms

Naproxen comes in several oral forms, including: 

Immediate-release tablets: Taken by mouth every 8 to 12 hours as needed for OTC use.

Extended-release tablets: Long-acting tablets taken once daily, primarily for chronic conditions like arthritis.

Delayed-release tablets: With a special coating to protect the stomach, the medicine is released further in the intestine.

Suspension (liquid). 

To reduce the risk of stomach irritation, it is recommended to take naproxen with food, milk, or an antacid. Dosage depends on the specific condition, and the lowest effective dose should be used for the shortest possible duration. 

Side effects and warnings

Serious side effects of naproxen are rare but possible. According to Drugs.com and MedlinePlus, common side effects can include: 

Indigestion, heartburn, stomach pain, or nauseaHeadache, dizziness, or drowsiness

Bruising, rash, or itching

Swelling in your hands or feet

Ringing in the ears 

Important warnings

According to the FDA, naproxen, like other NSAIDs, carries a "boxed warning" due to the risk of serious side effects: 

Cardiovascular risks: Naproxen can increase the risk of a fatal heart attack or stroke, especially with long-term or high-dose use. The risk is higher for those with existing heart disease or risk factors.

Gastrointestinal risks: It can cause life-threatening stomach or intestinal bleeding, ulcers, and perforation. The risk is higher for older adults and those with a history of GI bleeding or ulcers. 

Contraindications

Do not take naproxen if you: 

Have a history of an allergic reaction or asthma attack after taking aspirin or another NSAID.

Are undergoing or have recently had heart bypass surgery (CABG).

Are in your third trimester of pregnancy.

Have active stomach bleeding or an ulcer.
